Death Mountain

January 9, 2008

Those grade 5 students who have heard me speak about the adventure genre before, may remember my talking about one of my favorites, a book titled Frozen Stiff by Sherry Shahan. I enjoyed it because the setting involved one of my favorite pastimes, kayaking.

Well, Sherry Shahan has a more recent title in the same genre and it just came out in paperback. Death Mountain tells the story of 14 year-old Erin who is hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when a sudden storm descends. Erin and another girl she had befriended must rely on their own determination and skills, as well as each other, to survive hunger, freezing nights, exhaustion and injuries. Author Shahan uses many details to evoke the desperate situation the girls face, similar to Gary Paulsen and Will Hobbs.

Let me know if you enjoy this!                                                Mrs. Aveline
